This is a site dedicated to the proper captive husbandry of North and Central American Garter Snakes and Ribbon Snakes (Genus Thamnophis). Here you will find all the information you need to properly care for these fascinating creatures. This genus has traditionally been considered to be the ideal beginners' snake. Unfortunately this belief is often based on the relatively low monetary value of these animals, rather than on their ease of maintenance. If you're looking for a simple beginners' snake you should rather consider the various Rat Snakes and King Snakes that are readily available to the novice keeper. While it is true to say that the care of Garter Snakes is in no way difficult, neither are they the simplest of snakes to correctly maintain.... certain rules must be adhered to if you wish your snake to live out a long and comfortable life.
